Ce l'abbiamo fatta!

"Much of our delight we received your letter about my father Umberto and your grandmother his sister Argentina" così inizia la lettera di Joseph, l'ultimo figlio di Umberto che ieri ci ha riempito di commozione. Di questi cugini d'America si erano perse le tracce: non si conoscevano i loro nomi, quanti fossero, né dove si trovassero. Era desiderio di mia nonna incontrarli; purtroppo questo regalo non sono riuscita a farglielo essendo lei mancata nel 2002. Ma insieme a mio marito ci siamo "incaponiti" nella ricerca di questi parenti smarriti. Siamo partiti da un nome"Irene" fornitoci da zia Albertina, figlia di Giuseppe. Sapevamo già che la moglie di Berto era originaria di Campli. Così, spulciando fra i registri di immigrazione di Ellis Island mio marito ha selezionato un rigo riguardante una Irene Pilli di Campli nata nel 1900 immigrata negli Stati Uniti nel 1921, che andava a ricongiungersi con suo fratello a Baltimora. Abbiamo sperato che quella fosse la nostra Irene e l'abbiamo collegata a Umberto D'angelo. Ne è venuto fuori che nel 1930 Umberto aveva cambiato il cognome da D'angelo in Diangelo (siamo in attesa di conoscerne il motivo). Da lì siamo risaliti ai suoi figli. Raccontata così sembra impresa facile ma è stata tutt'altro. E' durata molti anni ed è costata, a mio marito specialmente, molte notti insonni davanti al computer! Ora la lettera di Joseph ci fornisce nuovi dati: Umberto sposò Irene Pilli intorno al 1922 ed ebbe da lei 5 figli:

Di questi solo Marion e Joseph sono ancora in vita.
La famiglia abitava a Baltimora in Ellamont street. Umberto lavorò per la Pennsylvania Rail road come caposquadra; morì nel 1932 all'età di 44 anni, a seguito di un colpo di calore avuto mentre stava lavorando a quella maledetta ferrovia.

Irene, di 12 anni più giovane di lui, si ritrovò vedova con 5 figli piccoli da crescere; Joseph aveva solo 8 mesi quando il padre morì e certamente non può conservare un ricordo di lui. Attendiamo di avere notizie anche da Marion.
A questo punto speriamo in una bella rimpatriata di tutti i cugini D'Angelo!

"Much of our delight we received your letter about my father Umberto and your grandmother his sister Argentina" so begins the letter of Joseph, the last son of Umberto, that yesterday we read with emotion. We didn't know nothing about these cousins of America: not their names, not their number, not their location. My grandmother dreamed to meet them; unfortunatelly I couldn't give her this gift because on 2002 she died. But, together with my husband, we said "we must find them!". We began our reserche with just a name "Irene" that aunt Albertina, Giuseppe's daughter remerbered. We knew that the Berto's wife was from Campli(Italy). So, searching on the immigration registers of Ellis Island, my husband noticed a line regarding an Irene Pilli from Campli born on 1900, went to United States on 1920 which was reaching her brother in Baltimore. We hoped that she was our Irene and matched her with Umberto D'Angelo. We found out that Umberto on 1930 changed his surname in Diangelo (we don't know why at the moment). Then we found out the names of his children. This search was not at all easy. It cost to us many years and, especially to my husband, many nights in front of computer! Now the mail of Joseph gives us new informations: Umberto married Irene on 1922 and they had 5 children:

Unfortunatelly only Marion and Joseph are still alive. The family lived in Baltimore on Ellamont street. Umberto worked for the Pennsylvania Rail road as boss crew; he died on 1932 when he was 44 years old, because of a heat stroke that he had while he was working on that damned rail road.

Irene, who had 12 years less than him, became widow with 5 small children to grow up; Joseph was 8 months old when his father died and certainly he can't remember him. We wait for notices from Marion too. Now we hope that soon there will be a big meeting of all D'Angelo cousins!
